Impact-Resistant Roofing & Ventilation Upgrade in Aurora, OH

In the quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods of Aurora, Ohio, homeowners take great pride in maintaining the aesthetic and structural integrity of their properties. Recently, a local resident reached out to M&T Roofing & Restoration to address a series of growing concerns regarding their aging roof system. While the exterior of the home still held its charm, the roofing system was struggling under the weight of Northeast Ohio’s harsh weather cycles. From ice dams in the winter to excessive heat buildup in the summer, it was clear that the home needed more than just a surface-level fix—it required a comprehensive restoration of its entire ventilation and drainage infrastructure.
The Problem
Upon our initial inspection, the primary concern was poor attic ventilation. The existing roof was trapping heat and moisture, which had led to degradation of the roof decking. We discovered that the original soffits were not providing adequate intake air, and the interior baffles were either missing or collapsed, preventing air from flowing from the eaves to the ridge. This lack of airflow had caused the shingles to age prematurely and led to wood rot in several areas. Specifically, we identified 12 sheets of plywood that were completely compromised and required immediate replacement.
Our Solution
To ensure this Aurora home would remain protected for decades, M&T Roofing & Restoration proposed a total system overhaul. The strategy focused on two pillars: superior material durability and optimized airflow. We decided to perform a full roof replacement that addressed the root cause of the previous failure. By replacing all old soffits at the eaves with modern vented soffits and installing new baffles in the attic, we ensured a continuous flow of cool air. To handle the heavy Ohio rain and snowmelt, we upgraded the drainage system to high-capacity 6-inch gutters and oversized 3x4 downspouts. Finally, we selected GAF’s Class 4 impact-resistant shingles to provide the ultimate defense against the hail and wind storms common in our region.
Materials & Products
As a GAF Master Elite® contractor, we utilized the GAF Lifetime Roofing System to provide the homeowner with the best warranty in the industry. The project featured:
GAF ArmorShield II (ASII) Shingles: Class 4 impact-rated shingles for superior storm protection.
GAF Deck-Armor: A premium breathable underlayment that allows moisture to escape the attic.
Cobra Snow Country Advanced Ridge Vent: To facilitate exhaust ventilation at the roof's peak.
GAF Storm Guard: High-temperature ice and water shield installed at the eaves and valleys.
Vented Soffits & Baffles: New components to fix the intake air flow issues.
Upgraded Drainage: 6" gutters, 3x4 downspouts, and heavy-duty metal valleys.
Finishing Touches: GAF Masterflow pivot boot pipe flashings and custom-painted HVAC and gable vents for a cohesive look.
The Process
A project of this scale requires precision and respect for the homeowner’s property. We began by setting up the "Catch-All" netting system to shield the customer's manicured landscaping and flower beds from falling debris. To protect the driveway and lawn, we utilized the Equiptor—a mobile, drivable debris trailer that allows our crew to manage old materials at the roofline without dragging them across the yard. After stripping the old layers, we replaced the 12 damaged plywood sheets to ensure a solid structural base. Our crew worked meticulously to install the new soffits, fascia, and baffles before laying the GAF system. To finish, we performed a meticulous multi-pass magnet sweep of the entire perimeter to ensure every stray nail was recovered, leaving the property safer than we found it.
The Result
The transformation of this Aurora residence was both functional and visual. By painting the HVAC vents black to match the GAF ArmorShield II shingles and the gable vents a crisp white to match the new fascia, we achieved a high-end, custom aesthetic. More importantly, the home now "breathes" correctly. The combination of the vented soffits and the Cobra ridge vent ensures that the attic stays cool and dry, protecting the new shingles and the structural decking from the inside out. The homeowner now enjoys the peace of mind that comes with a GAF Master Elite® installation, knowing their home is ready to withstand whatever the Northeast Ohio climate throws its way.
